This extraordinary event afforded a select group of invited guests an unprecedented opportunity to watch and discuss in an informal and casual setting the impact of this must-see Danny Glover-executive produced documentary that features contemporary artists reworking Civil Rights Movement-themed protest songs. Artists such as The Roots, Wyclef Jean, Joss Stone, John Legend, Richie Havens, Anthony Hamilton with the Blind Boys of Alabama (above left), and others contributed to the project. The 8th film of our monthly series, directed by Martin Scorsese (1985), celebrates the grittier side of New York's mid-80s culture. Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) is a word processor who experiences a hellish and seemingly endless night on the seedy streets of NYC's SoHo village; broke, frenzied and at his rope's end he is thrust into the increasingly upsetting and often outlandish lives of a variety of ensemble characters. A sequence of misfortunes, coupled with misunderstandings and tragedies threaten Paul's safety and sanity while he attempts to get back to his apartment, uptown. Read more »
