Check out their <a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/4jy0qfVL2jNJOXFHsVf7WF?si=_nuM08gLQsOCFY2BTcO4FQ" target="_blank"><em>Strange Circles</em></a> (2017) and <em>What Heat</em> (2018) albums on <a href="https://open.spotify.com/album/2ks7K8DI5MjJWfm3W56qjm?si=cbuyVk_VQOyxrjF-4GcOdQ" target="_blank">Spotify</a> to get a taste of how wonderfully infectious and moving this music is. The band was formed by musician/composer <b>Michael League</b>, he of Grammy–winning, Texan–bred, New York–based instrumental jazz collective, Snarky Puppy. His new project collects epic players from five countries and four continents, different genders, races and generations "working in harmony, celebrating individuality." A band giving a voice to those that don't have voices, sharing their passion for life and justice through music. Vocalist Malika Tirolien sings in both French and Guadeloupean Creole, the language of her childhood home. Bokanté means "exchange." Make no mistake, this is world beat music for the masses.</p> </div> <section> <h2>Add new comment</h2> <drupal-render-placeholder callback="comment.lazy_builders:renderForm" arguments="0=node&amp;1=3924&amp;2=comment_node_story&amp;3=comment_node_story" token="orNMTBCgHWqUYR41mJBpHav0lxgzg0ODkGvYiwA51Fo"></drupal-render-placeholder> </section> Sun, 23 Feb 2020 16:02:28 +0000 Webmaster 3924 at http://culturecatch.com Song of the Week: "Water Fountain" http://culturecatch.com/index.php/music/video-of-the-week-tune-yards <span>Song of the Week: &quot;Water Fountain&quot;</span> <span><a title="View user profile." href="/index.php/users/dusty-wright" lang="" about="/index.php/users/dusty-wright" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Dusty Wright</a></span> <span>April 29, 2014 - 17:13</span> <div class="field field--name-field-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Topics</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/music" hreflang="en">Music Review</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Tags</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/taxonomy/term/766" hreflang="en">world beat</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/jbiFcPhccu8" width="560"></iframe></p> <p>The tribal drum groove is unmistakable and wildly infectious, like the sideways Bo <span data-scayt_word="Didley" data-scaytid="1">Didley</span> beat of "I Want Candy" meets Babatunde Olatunji. Merrill Garbus aka tUnE-yArDs video for "Water Fountain" (from <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/nikki-nack/id838008963?uo=4&amp;at=11l4R8" target="_blank"><em>Nikki Nack</em></a>) with its wacky Pee Wee's Play House on acid animation is inspired fun. Perfect for any road trip, rain forests and deserts alike. Double dutching or sidewalk surfing, too. </p> <!--break--></div> <section> </section> Tue, 29 Apr 2014 21:13:34 +0000 Dusty Wright 2992 at http://culturecatch.com Take the Road to Malian Music Mastery http://culturecatch.com/index.php/music/take-road-malian-music-mastery <span>Take the Road to Malian Music Mastery</span> <span><a title="View user profile." href="/index.php/users/steveholtje" lang="" about="/index.php/users/steveholtje" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Steve Holtje</a></span> <span>June 30, 2009 - 17:47</span> <div class="field field--name-field-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Topics</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/music" hreflang="en">Music Review</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Tags</div> <div class="field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/index.php/taxonomy/term/766" hreflang="en">world beat</a></div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p><img align="left" alt="Vieux_Farka_Toure_Fondo" height="271" src="/sites/default/files/images/Vieux_Farka_Toure_Fondo.jpg" style="float:right" width="300" /></p> <p> </p> <p><strong><span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Vieux" data-scaytid="7">Vieux</span> <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Farka" data-scaytid="19">Farka</span> <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Touré" data-scaytid="23">Touré</span>: <i><span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Fondo" data-scaytid="25">Fondo</span></i> (Six Degrees)</strong></p> <p>The late Ali <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Farka" data-scaytid="21">Farka</span> <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Touré's" data-scaytid="31">Touré's</span> 28-year-old son <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Vieux" data-scaytid="9">Vieux</span> inherited his father's talents. Vieux is a chip off the old block in both his singing and his stinging guitar style; he taught himself guitar by playing along with his father's albums and learning his tuning system. So it's not surprising that he sometimes sounds exactly like his dad on his second album, <i><span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Fondo" data-scaytid="27">Fondo</span></i> ("the road"), especially on the traditional song "<span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Walé" data-scaytid="33">Walé</span>" (all other tracks are <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Vieux" data-scaytid="13">Vieux</span> originals), and certainly fans of his father's music -- especially his <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="bluesy" data-scaytid="35">bluesy</span>, keening guitar style -- will enjoy this album.</p> <p>But <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Vieux" data-scaytid="15">Vieux</span> is not content to merely copy; his music has a distinct personality, often denser, its style slightly more modern. It's not that he's been seduced by synthesizers or similar electronic accouterments; it's the way the drumming is heavier (for instance, the rock-reggae beat of "Diaraby Magni" interestingly, a little biographical research shows that Vieux was a drummer before he was a guitarist.</p> <p>For variety, there's the beautiful instrumental "Paradise," featuring <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="kora" data-scaytid="37">kora</span> virtuoso <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Toumani" data-scaytid="39">Toumani</span> <span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Diabaté" data-scaytid="41">Diabaté</span>. That and a short instrumental reprise of the opening song, "<span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Fafa" data-scaytid="43">Fafa</span>," close the album on a gentle note.</p> <p>My only complaint is that Six Degrees has left non-natives in the dark about song lyrics—there are no lyric sheets, translations, or even those little song-by-song summaries world-music fans are used to. Nonetheless, on its musical merits alone, <i><span class="scayt-misspell" data-scayt_word="Fondo" data-scaytid="29">Fondo</span></i> just might turn out to be the best new African album of 2009. </p> </div> <section> </section> Tue, 30 Jun 2009 21:47:31 +0000 Steve Holtje 1154 at http://culturecatch.com
