35. “Phantom Limb” – The Shins
36. “Bottomliners” – Brian Eno
37. “Neh Yelginete (My First Love)” – Dub Colossus
38. “Get Even” – The Evens
Who would’ve guessed that after Fugazi, Ian McKaye would form a duo -- with Amy Farina (Warmers) -- that's closer to folk and pop than to post-punk (or Minor Threat’s hardcore, for that matter)? But with his bitingly astute lyrics as political as ever, the results were still intense and uncompromising.
39. “New Wave Folk Austerity” – Jason Forrest
More technically dazzling yet also more subtle than Girl Talk, Jason Forrest (previously AKA Donna Summer) is the master of sample-tronica, a more intricate and frenetically shifting collage of styles than the more popular, crowd-pleasing mash-up genre.
40. “Broken Arrows” – José González
I went for a fan video using the album track, because the trumpet part is such a crucial flavor in the song.

42. “Irish Blood, English Heart” – Morrissey
43. “Formed a Band” – Art Brut
44. “Welcome To:” – Ani DiFranco

48. “Aerial” – The Sea and Cake
49. “For the Future” – Do As Infinity
50. “Sufficiently Breakfast” – Je Suis France
52. “Golden Age” – TV on the Radio
53. “Dark as Days” – Army Navy
54. “Time the Conqueror” – Jackson Browne
55. “So Long, Lonesome” – Explosions in the Sky
56. “Lost Verses” – Sun Kil Moon
58. “Sugar, We're Going Down” – Fall Out Boy
59. “Intervention” – Arcade Fire
61. "Pussy and Money" – The Dictators
62. “Bete Noir” – The Gutter Twins
64. “At the Dept. of Forgotten Songs” – Jens Lekman
65. "My Friends Over You" – New Found Glory

- Steve Holtje

Mr. Holtje is a Brooklyn-based poet and composer who splits his time between editing Culturecatch.com, working at the Williamsburg record store Sound Fix, and editing cognitive neuroscience books for Oxford University Press. No prizes for guessing which pays best.
Comments
I like the song...
...but I'm a big Smashing Pumpkins fan and it sound a little like to "Today".
Can you
narrow that down a little?
"Fake"
I was referring to the opening bars of "Fake" by The Frames. For some reason when I was checking it out that was the only video that came up, now I see that there are many others and understand your confusion in regards to what must a seemed a rather vague comment by myself.
I definitely agree on
I definitely agree on Morrissey. I would have put him number one though, but I gues I am not objective since I am a fan. Arcade Fire is also in my top 10 actually, regardless of the period considered. Thanks for the share!
